About the authorJoseph Sparling, Ph.D., is an honorary professorial fellow at the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at The University of Melbourne (Australia). He is also a senior scientist emeritus at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina. Professor Sparling’s 50-year career has been focused on bringing educational opportunities to disadvantaged families with children from birth through age five. In 1971 Professor Sparling developed the early educational program known as the Abecedarian Approach with Professor Craig Ramey–one of the few evidence-based, proven programs that integrates basic principles of human learning and development into an effective approach to early childhood education. Currently, Professor Sparling is a Director of the 3A (Abecedarian Approach Australia) Project that provides professional development for Aboriginal child and family services to assist them in implementing the Abecedarian Approach.
